Victoria Wyton-Mills (b.1970) is an emerging British painter born in Birmingham and based in Solihull.
Hello!
My paintings are often characterised by having a strong cinematic quality, which relates to a heightened use of colour and bold tonal contrasts. Drama or mood are created with a strong emphasis on how light interacts with where it falls, reflecting and refracting.
In my process of developing an idea for a charcoal drawing or oil painting I will often use photography, staging and lighting scenes, or editing old photographs. Making drawings and colour studies before working in layers towards a finished artwork.
More recently in facilitating art work with older groups of people the importance of shared memory and nostalgia have become evident in my work. It is my intention that my work serves to connect and celebrate the people and places I know, and to reveal, or provoke deeper thoughts on what it is to be human.
I studied art as my main subject as part of a Bachelor of Education degree (1989-1993) under the tutelage of David Carpanini (RBA), and went on to a career in teaching, specialising in the Early Years. This has had an impact on how I value learning through play and exploring materials.
I have been successful in being selected for open call exhibitions both regional and national (a full list is available on the exhibitions page of this website).
Sales and commissioning.
Please get in touch if you see a painting that you like or if you’d like to commission a piece. At present I am very interested in working from old photographs in my portrait and figure work. Perhaps you have an old photo that deserves to be turned into an artwork to treasure?
Don’t be shy about negotiating prices. I work on an hourly rate and charge for canvas and framing.
I mainly use graphite, charcoal or oil paint in my practice and spend lots of time drawing and sketching from life. I am also passionate about engaging others in doing the same….
Art for Fun: I facilitate an ‘Art for Fun’ group for adults at my local community centre in Shirley each week, planning the programme, giving demonstrations and coaching.
Drawbridge Art: I am an active member of the Drawbridge Art Group that meet each week in Solihull to draw from life. I am responsible for booking and working with the models (do get in touch if you’d like to pose for the portrait sessions or if you have experience as a life model).
Hall Green Arts Society: I have been a member of this thriving society in Birmingham for a few years now and I am very grateful for the friendship and support it provides. We meet together each month to sketch, exhibit together twice each year in Moseley or Kings Heath in Birmingham, and have monthly demonstrations from artists.
Solihull Core Creatives: I was a member of this initiative for a couple of years and benefitted from the exhibiting and commissioning opportunities it created. From 2022 to 2023 I partnered with Parrabbola in creating a community gallery in an empty shop in Mell Square in Solihull. Each month meeting with and supporting a new local artist or group to exhibit.
RBSA Friends: This group has provided opportunities to draw and paint in venues across Birmingham and in doing so I have made connections and new friends, as well as being chosen to exhibit.
United Artists of South Birmingham: In 2025 I joined USAB and I am looking forward to exhibiting with them and helping to create more opportunities for local artists to work together.
